NEWLY-ELECTED Tennis Zimbabwe (TZ) president Cecil Gombera says his priority during his tenure in office will be the development of junior players.

Chingoka, at the helm of TZ for 14 years, was elected to head the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC).

In an interview with IndependentSport this week, Gombera said his aim was to keep Zimbabwe among the top teams in Africa.

“This year we finished seventh but we believe we have the capacity to be in the top five on the Africa junior tennis charts,” he said.

Gombera said TZ would continue with the development of the sport with the objective of nurturing the juniors which will in future form the backbone of the Zimbabwe Davis Cup team.

The tennis boss said his executive would improve the coaching base, arming coaches with the latest techniques necessary for the development of the sport.

“We will set ourselves targets during which we will be back in the World Group,” said Gombera.

Zimbabwe is currently in the Euro Africa Zone Group One after its 1-4 loss to Belgium this month denied the team a place in the elite World Group.
