Friendlies against Egypt confirmed

THE Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) has obtained a confirmation of back-to-back friendly matches against Egypt in the next two months, IndependentSport can reveal.

serif”>This paper saw documents faxed from Egypt confirming that the Warriors are expected in Cairo on May 23 for a match against the Pharoahs on May 25. The reverse fixture would be scheduled for Harare two weeks later.

Zifa chairman Rafik Khan said on Wednesday that the friendly matches had indeed been confirmed and the Warriors’ travel arrangements would soon be concluded.

“The team (The Warriors) must leave on May 22 for Cairo and will play the Egyptians on May 25 in that country’s capital. The reverse fixture will be played in Harare after two weeks,” said Khan.

Zifa has been struggling to organise the friendly matches against Egypt, with promises being made of arrangements nearing conclusion now and again.

The mother association however last week arranged a friendly against Chipolopolo of Zambia.

The Warriors are scheduled to leave for Zambia this morning by road to engage the neighbours tomorrow at Independence Stadium in Lusaka.

The Warriors return to battle in June for World Cup and African Cup of Nations qualifiers with the first match away in Gabon.

Zifa is under pressure to improve the team’s preparations after shambolic arrangements cost the team in the past.

Sources at Zifa revealed this week that the mother association was also trying to arrange friendly matches with South Africa before the qualifiers begin. – Staff Writer.
