ZIMBABWE internationals Nyasha Chazika and Alois “Tornado” Ngwerume were recently short-listed for the South African premiership Rookie of the month award for December. IndependentSport has
established that the two players who moved down south early this year are in the running for the prestigious award. They are competing against 21-year-old Frank Guela of Ivory Coast who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates’ teenage striker Lebohang Mokoena and Ajax Cape Town’s Nhlanhla Shabalala.
The award is given to new players in the South African premiership who would have played at least three matches for their respective teams and shown great promise.
Moroka Swallows’ hit man Ngwerume is a hot favourite to win the trophy and the R5 000 prize money. The Highdon Raylton 2002 Zifa Unity Cup sensation is proving to be a worthy purchase for the Dube Birds.
Coming on as a substitute in the few games he has played, the Mbare-born youngster has already scored two great goals and his intelligent moves upfront have seen him change the team’s rhythm whenever he is introduced.
According to his coach Gavin Hunt, he was destined to score many goals. Ngwerume netted a gem in the Coca Cola Cup quarterfinal match against Silver Stars.
Defender Chazika of Supersport United who is registered as Nicholas Chazika by the Mnet-owned club is reported to have shown great promise in the games he has featured so far.
The former Dynamos and Young Warriors captain has quickly fitted well in the side coached by Pitso Mosimane.
It is widely believed that if fans vote fairly, either of the two Zimbabweans would scoop the award sponsored by Edgars Stores. The last Zimbabwean player to take it home is Black Leopards’ flying winger Kelvin Mushangazhike, then with Kaizer Chiefs in 2002.
Warriors’ striker Adam Ndlovu was beaten to it on two occasions during his stint in South Africa.
