A ZIMBABWEAN student, Concilia Mavhurume, has been awarded the prestigious De Groote Scholarship to further her business studies in the United States.
Mavhurume is a first year international business major at the Saint Leo University located in Tampa, Florida.
She is among the first recipients of the De Groote Scholarship Fund at the campus.
The De Groote Trust was established in August this year through a US$2,5 million bequest of the late Captain Gaston R De Groote and Evelyn De Groote, a Tampa-area couple committed to Catholic higher education in Florida.
The De Groote Trust Fund is both the largest bequest and gift ever received by the university.
While placing no restrictions on the scholarships other than financial need, the Fund is available to American and foreign students.
Students may choose from 24 bachelor’s degrees and two graduate degree programmes.
A spokesperson for the university said as one of the leading providers of higher education in the US, Saint Leo’s enrollment includes more than 12 000 students at the traditional university campus, at many regional centres throughout Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia, and globally through the Centre for online learning.
