IN what could be a major development for basketball in Zimbabwe, two coaches from the United States’ renowned National Basketball Association (NBA) will be in the count

ry next month to conduct training.

The trip to Harare, sponsored by Sprite International, is from February 5-6. The two-day training clinic is targeting the 15-18 years age groups while the venues are yet to be decided.

Although the names of the officials making the trip to Harare were not available this week, it emerged that one of them is a former NBA player.

Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) secretary-general Donald Wasterfall, while confirming the development, said it was a perfect opportunity for local players to excel “to attract the eyes of the officials”. “It is an opportunity for our youngsters to excel and impress them. There are chances that if some of them excel, they would be recruited into college basketball in America,” he said.

Wasterfall said BUZ was looking for two conducive venues in preparation for the “historic occasion”.

Wasterfall said officials from NBA had said that they would work with 50 players. He said BUZ was now recruiting players to be part of the clinic.

Meanwhile Zimbabwe will be sending an Under-18 girls team for a tournament in France over the Easter holiday. Over 30 countries are expected to participate in the annual tournament.

The 15-member team will comprise 12 players and three officials.

Wasterfall said the selection process had begun and would be premised on the players selected at the Masvingo youth games last year.

“The selection would be finalised by the end of the month,” Wasterfall said.
