Harare council backtracks

Staff Writer

HARARE residents have forced the city council to review downwards its shock $1,3 trillion budget proposal announced in November, the Zimbabwe Independent heard this week.

The budget that was expected to be financed from hiking rates by an average 1 500% in services provided by the council provoked the wrath of stakeholders with some threatening to boycott the new rates if they were not reviewed.

Finance committee chairperson Councillor Elizabeth Marunda confirmed that council has agreed to review the proposals in line with residents’ objections.

“At the workshop we held on Monday as councillors and our technocrats we resolved to have a second look at the residents’ objections,” Marunda said.

“We will be giving feedback on our resolution to the residents on Monday.”
