Council to defy Chombo over elections

Augustine Mukaro

HARARE City Council will next week defy Local Government minister Ignatius Chombo and proceed with elections to choose a deputy mayor.

e=”Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif”>Last week Chombo ordered the council to postpone the elections until the probe into suspended Mayor Elias Mudzuri was completed.

Councillors who spoke to the Zimbabwe Independent yesterday said the MDC-led council resolved to defy Chombo’s directive at a caucus meeting last Friday. The move was in pursuit of their effort to remove acting mayor Sekesai Makwavarara after she allegedly ignored party directives to oppose Chombo’s continued meddling in council affairs.

“After realising that his order to postpone the elections would be defied, Chombo proceeded to suspend the two councillors who had forwarded their names to contest the deputy mayor’s post,” one councillor said.

Councillors Fani Munengami and Falls Nhari were suspended last Friday.

The suspensions came on the same day the elections were scheduled.

The two were due to contest the deputy mayor’s post together with Makwavarara and Christopher Mushonga.

Mushonga and Makwavarara had openly supported Chombo’s directives to withdraw the suspended Mudzuri’s benefits.

Nhari who chairs the finance committee was tipped to take-over as the deputy mayor.

“Councillors are aware of Chombo’s efforts to retain the seeming Zanu PF-sympathetic Makwavarara. More councillors such as Benjamin Maimba, Last Maengahama and Elizabeth Marunda forwarded their names for the deputy mayor’s post after the suspension of Nhari and Munengami,” he said.

Contacted yesterday, Munengami and Nhari said it was premature to comment on the matter as council would be siting to decide on the suspensions.

The letters to suspend the two councillors did not give any reasons but only said: “You have been suspended because of your conduct in council, which has irregularities”.
