DOLORES Cortes Meldrum, wife of Guardian correspondent Andrew Meldrum who was illegally expelled from Zimbabwe last month, fled the country on Wednesday after being told the
Immigration department wanted to serve her with a deportation order.
Her lawyers have pointed out she obtained her residence permit independently of her husband and there was no legal basis for her deportation.
She pre-empted immigration officials by taking a plane to Johannesburg on Wednesday from where she flew to London.
Meanwhile, Andrew Meldrum has been appointed by the Guardian as a correspondent in South Africa. He will be based in Pretoria from where he will cover Zimbabwe.
“If the government thought they could silence me by throwing me out then they were wrong,” Meldrum said from London yesterday. .
