Fan scrutiny on Kunonga

HOT music property of the moment, Victor Kunonga, currently enjoying a wave of airplay following the release of his second album Uyo, faces fan scrutiny on stage tonight at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) where together with Sam Mtukud

zi he is billed to curtain-raise for local international stars Oliver Mtukudzi and South Africa-based artist, Louis Mhlanga, in what has been dubbed the biggest show of the year.

Kunonga will have to prove his mettle on stage following a shower of praises for his latest offering set to define the musician as a force to reckon with in the industry. And he will do so before a vociferous crowd that will expect nothing but value for its money. Coordinator of the show, Misheck Makahamadze on Tuesday told independentxtra that preparations for tonight’s event had been done thoroughly and security has been beefed up to deal with pick-pockets known for descending on such big shows.

“It promises to be an exciting show and we have called it the ‘Shutdown’ since it’s the last high-profile musical show before year-end. We’re showcasing Zimbabwe’s own international stars and it’s an early Christmas treat for their fans.

“This show is not only drawing people from Harare but from the whole of Zimbabwe. We have been receiving phone calls from across the country pertaining to hotel and accommodation enquiries.”

Meanwhile, Kunonga has lost lead guitarist Leo Musena who died on Monday at Parirenyatwa Hospital. An exasperated Kunonga said: “He was arguably the best guitarist we have had in the country and we have decided to dedicate our performance (tonight) to him.

“We want to give him a good musical send-off as he’s going to be difficult to replace.”
