Supporters petition Chigwedere

A SUSPECTED Zanu PF-rented crowd yesterday petitioned Sports minister Aeneas Chigwedere to stop the rot in local soccer during a peaceful demonstration. The placard-wielding demonstrators urged

the minister to “suspend from football all power-hungry administrators and officials”.

Soccer supporters’ leader Simon Jamanda and Edward Chataika, Zanu PF’s District Coordinating Committee chairman for Ward Six in Mbare, signed the petition.

One of the demonstrators interviewed by IndependentSport said he was not aware of the motive of the protest and that transport had been provided for them. “We were ferried from Mbare and we don’t know what we are demonstrating for,” he said.

Addressing the demonstrators, Chigwedere pledged to revamp and trim the Zimbabwe Football Association Council by the end of the year.

The stage-managed demonstration had political tones as Chigwedere said soccer could be used to protect the image and sovereignty of the country.

The demonstrators had placards with political messages such as “Pamberi naCde Chigwedere”, “Rambai Makashinga” and “Viva Chief Svosve”.

After Chigwedere’s speech his bodyguard collected the placards.
