SPORTS personalities are set to be awarded for their performance in various disciplines at a ceremony to held next month, the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) announced yesterday.
The Annual National Sports Awards to honour this year’s outstanding sportspersons, will be held on January 28.
Rewards will be in 15 categories.
The director-general of the SRC, Elias Musangeya, said: “We have moved from the single winner to allow all sports personalities to be honoured for positively contributing to sport,” said Musangeya.
He said the commission was currently working on the modalities in terms of finalising the sponsors and the selection criteria for the awards. He said $600 million had been set aside for the ceremony and would go towards the prizes and hosting expenses.
The awards will also include foreign-based sports personalities for their outstanding performances on the international scene.
Chairman of the selection panel, Steve Vickers, said consultations were currently being held with the various sports bodies to enable the judges to come up with the winners.
Categories for this year’s awards include junior sportsperson, junior sportsman, junior sportswoman, junior sportsman with a disability and sportswoman with a disability.
