THE Mashonaland Volleyball Association (MVA) has geared up its efforts to start the 2004 premier league season next weekend with a referees’ refresher course this weekend.
MVA’s publicity and information officer Erasmus Mupukuta said the refresher course for match officials will be held at Harare’s Allan Wilson High School on Sunday.
He said the MVA has to upgrade referees and open employment opportunities for them on the courts.
“For the first time we’ll now employ referees,” he said.
Mupukuta however refused to give salary figures for the match officials.
“It’s not much but we’ll be giving them transport allowances and refreshments, basically.”
MVA is yet to secure sponsorship and survives on subscriptions paid by clubs.
In next week’s fixtures the women’s titleholders Varsity square up against Black Rhinos among seven matches scheduled for University of Zimbabwe courts.
Varsity men will also bank on home support when they meet Air Zimbabwe in an earlier game while the airliner’s women side plays against Malbereign Sharks.
Martin Dururu’s Braeside-based Junior Stars Harare face men’s defending champions Malbereign Sharks.
The other ties will feature Black Rhinos men against Kutama Old Boys Association, while Mufakose Hawks will face Stars.
CBZ Jewels square up against Thunder of Highfield in the other encounter.
MVA draws teams from Harare and surrounding provinces.
