TWO Zimbabwean rowers won gold medals at the South African nationals held in Pretoria last week.
The husband and wife team of Robin Barratt and Helen Barratt from Hunyani Rowing Club competed in the 51st South African Championshi
p Regatta held at Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria.
Hunyani captain Robin Barratt won gold in the Men’s Masters 1 000m sculling event setting a new record time of 04.01.75 and breaking the old record by two seconds. Robin paced his race perfectly pulling through from fourth place to second place during the second half of the race and going for gold in the last 50 metres.
Helen Barratt won gold in the Women’s B Division 2 000m sculling event in a time of 09.12.51. Helen had to fend off fierce competition from an Egyptian rival throughout the race but months of gruelling training ensured her win.
The Barratts also competed together in the Men’s Masters Doubles event. They managed to hold off three men’s doubles and achieved an admirable second place.
Commenting on their success, Robin Barratt said: “With these excellent wins combined with the very successful recent schools tour and the squad training for the upcoming junior world regatta in Amsterdam, Zimbabwe rowing has certainly assumed a more international standard.” — Own Correspondent.
