ZC to meet over crisis

THE Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) board meets next week where a petition by almost all national team players this week calling for the reinstatement of axed coach Phil Simmons will be tabled.

elvetica, sans-serif”>The players wrote a letter to ZC chairman Peter Chingoka, vice-chairman Ahmed Ebrahim and managing director Ozias Bvute demanding the reinstatement of Simmons, who was fired after the team suffered heavy innings defeats to New Zealand in two Tests in August.

Captain Tatenda Taibu, Heath Streak and Andy Blignaut were among the 30 players who signed the petition. Star all-rounder Streak, however, this week announced his retirement from the Zimbabwe team to take over as captain of English county side Warwickshire.

Simmons is contesting his dismissal, saying it was done in contravention of the ZC constitution.

Chingoka said the board will discuss the petition alongside other burning issues threatening the survival of Zimbabwe cricket. He said stakeholders would meet to revise the continual poor performances by the team after Kenya on Wednesday completed a clean sweep over the locals after winning their last three-day match at Harare Sports Club.

“We have to sit down after the Kenya tour to discuss and exchange notes,” said Chingoka. “All the technical people have to do a thorough post-mortem.” – Staff Writer.
