THE Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association (Zaba) has started intensive preparations to send an Under 20 squad to Mozambique for the Zone Six championships running from April 22 to May 2.
Eight selected boxers are scheduled to go into camp on Monday prior to the trip to Maputo.
The blood and sweat sport of boxing still seeks to determine its future in Zimbabwe when pugilists in the Under 20 age group compete in the contest.
After qualifiers staged at Kwekwe’s Amaveni township-based BloodSpot centre on February 27, Zaba national coach Petros Masiyambumbi confirmed all was set for the Mozambique games.
Boxers who stole the all-night show in Kwekwe include Gaths Mine Stable’s lightweight category’s Pishon Chiramba, Richard Sambo, lightheavyweight Chamunorwa Gonorenda and another Gaths Mine-based welterweight Victor Masunga.
Zimbabwe National Army’s lightweight Anyway Gatsi also took part.
But Zimbabwean boxing seems to have failed to make the road to Athens 2004 Olympics in Greece after failing to raise US$400 to send at least two boxers for the qualifiers held in Botswana.
