Cheetahs eye World Sevens Series

ZIMBABWE Sevens rugby manager Bruce Hobson was furious last year when the IRB snubbed Zimbabwe for the World Sevens Series.

This week, Hobson spoke as passionatel

y to IndependentSport as he did a year ago after the snub, but this time the tone was draped with confidence that Zimbabwe’s Zambezi Cheetahs will receive an invitation for the annual World Series in Dubai and the South African port city of George in December.

The IRB is expected to make the decisions next week.

“Everything is designed for Dubai and George,” said Hobson. “It will be a huge disappointment if we do not get invited again. We have put up enough groundwork at the Hasquivana Academy, where the bulk of the preparations are based. I have written to the IRB several times and they are now sick and tired of me. They say shut up and wait – but we can’t wait.

“We now have a nucleus of players who understand sevens rugby. Unlike in the past when we had to wait for the sevens season to start after the fifteens seasons ended, we have been training the whole year, so basically we have an understanding of players who should be in the national team. We have also identified guys from the Under 19’s who we are teaching to play.”

Indeed going by events so far this year, Zimbabwe deserves an invitation this year. The Cheetahs had a successful tour of Europe where they played in the Amsterdam and Benidorm Sevens in Holland and Spain respectively. – Staff Writer.
