Cameo, Giants face off

HOLDERS Cameo have a tough battle on their hands as they attempt to defend their title against Bulawayo side Giants in the Sprite National Basketball Championship final at the City Sports Centre tomorrow.

Cameo will be banking on

teenage guard Nyasha Mushekwi, who was recently voted the most valuable player in the Mashonaland Basketball Association league. The Harare side also have in their arsenal national team players Farai Tumbare and Nixon Mawire.

But Giants, who scooped the regional Matabeleland Basketball Association championship, can also look to their own national team trio of Tonderai Mukubvu, Eric Banda and the versatile Emmanuel Mukandi, who is also a Zimbabwe rugby international.

The two sides pulled through from the semi-finals in Bulawayo last weekend, with Cameo dismissing Varsity Leopards 71-50, while Giants saw off Mufakose 66-37.

The championship, sponsored to the tune of US$25 000 by Sprite, will see the winners walking away with $60 million and the runners-up $40 million. However, the women’s final pitting Cameo and Varsity Leopards is not sponsored.

Although Cameo beat Leopards in the Mashonaland league early in the season, the more experienced Leopards are favourites to retain their title. Cameo’s side will be weakened as some of their players, who are school girls, will be playing in an Under-21 tournament at Girls High School on the same day. – Staff Writer.
