THE Zimbabwe side is now in camp at the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy in Harare in preparation for the Under-19 Afro-Asia Cup in India.

Although 14 players will travel to India, the selectors chose a provisional squad of 20 in view of the International Cricket Council Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka next year.

The team’s captain, Sean Williams, already has one-day international caps for Zimbabwe. Williams played in the last ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh as opening batsmen and spin bowler, and was Zimbabwe’s most outstanding player in that tournament.

Leg-spinner Graeme Cremer, who was in top form for the Zimbabwe A side in the Duleep Trophy in India, will be returning to the sub-continent for the second time in as many weeks after joining his Under-19 teammates on Wednesday. Cremer took a career best seven wickets for 114-runs for the President’s XI side against North Zone last week.

Some of the notable players in the Zimbabwe team include batsmen Chamunorwa Chibhabha and Kudakwashe Samunderu, wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Mufambisi and pace bowler Ian Nicholson.

“I am quite happy with the preparations so far but it could be better,” said team manager Dilip Chouhan. “Most of the players have been playing club cricket and we also played a warm-up game on Tuesday before it was interrupted by rain. We play again on Monday against a combination of Zimbabwe A and national team players.”

The six Test nations from the Asian and African continents will take part in the inaugural Under-19 Afro-Asian tournament.

Zimbabwe play their first game on November 19 against South Africa and then meet Pakistan the following day. They then take on India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on November 22, 23 and 25 respectively.

Coach Walter Chawaguta is assisted by Harare Sports Club coach and pitch curator Robin Brown, who is the team’s technical adviser. Former Under-19 player Tinashe Ruswa is the team’s analyst.
