THE newly-formed Zimbabwe Golf Union (ZGU) is drafting the association’s constitution before a substantive executive is put in office soon.
y>ZGU was established in August last year following a directive by the Sports and Recreation Commission that golf associations come under a single governing body. The ZGU consists of representatives from the Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association (ZPGA), the Zimbabwe Golfers Association (for amateur golfers), the Zimbabwe Junior Golfers Associaton, the Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Association and the Golf Referees of Zimbabwe.
The union is currently in the hands of an interim committee. Neville Henley and Morgan Shumba, the leaders of the amateur and professional associations, are the founding president and vice-president of ZGU respectively.
The new body has been tasked to oversee the development aspect of golf in the country, which has hit its lowest ebb since the best years of Zimbabwean golf in the early 1990s.
Meanwhile, just one tournament has been confirmed so far in the ZPGA season that is yet to take off.
Insurance giant Zimre will sponsor a $20 million tournament in August. The company wanted the tournament hosted last season but the professionals had no slot for it.
