CONSTRUCTION of the multi-million dollar Mhangura and Alaska Sports Academy is expected to be complete by mid-year, the IndependentSport heard this week.

WSI director Themba Mliswa said yesterday the groundwork has been done and the academy would be in full swing in the next six months.

“Work is underway and we are talking to Chinhoyi University of Technology to establish a twinning partnership with the academy,” he said.

A chief operating officer, Austin Hakunavanhu, was appointed this week to speed up work on the academy.

Hakunavanhu is a Zifa councillor.

The WSI boss said the management team would be mandated to speak to associations like Zifa, Tennis Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) and the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU).

“The management team would work directly with these associations,” said Mliswa. He said the ECS chief executive officer, Gino Laureyssen, is expected in the country late this month to evaluate the project.

Laureyssen was in the country last month and toured the facility.

ECS is working in partnership with investors like Pierre Lano who intends to install artificial turf on the fields at the academy.
