Warriors back in Fifa top 100

ZIMBABWE have slipped back into Fifa’s world top 100 rankings following their 3-1 win against Malawi in an academic 2008 African Nations Cup qualifier a fortnight ago.

The Warriors have moved up eight places to number 93 in

the latest rankings released this week.

In Africa, Zimbabwe have moved four places to number 22.

Zimbabwe had slumped to their worst Fifa world ranking ever last month after they slid down to number 101.

The ranking mirrored Zimbabwe’s poor campaign for the Nations Cup finals which cost coach Charles Mhlauri his job.

Norman Mapeza was appointed interim Warriors coach last month and led Zimbabwe past Malawi — their first victory in a competitive match since January 31 2006.

At the start of the year Zimbabwe were ranked number 72 in the world but were the worst movers in February after they dropped 22 places to 94.

Nigeria have leapfrogged over Cameroon to return to the top of the African football rankings.

The Super Eagles moved up three places on the overall rankings from 26 to 23, while the Indomitable Lions fell nine slots from 16 to 25.

The biggest movers in Africa were Equatorial Guinea leaping 33 places on the world list and become the number 14 side on the continent.

After Nigeria and Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Ghana and Mali make up Africa’s top 10 in that order.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Football Association has announced a Fifa players’ agents examination will be held in Harare next Thursday.

The examination fee is $100 million.

Acting Zifa chief executive Henrietta Rushwaya defended the steep fee.

“I think the fee is fair and anyone who is serious about becoming a player agent will sacrifice to pay,” Rushwaya said.

Zimbabwe has nine player agents registered with Fifa. They are Fortune Chisale, Tinashe Gomba, Bernard Gwarada, Gibson Mahachi, Winston Makamure, Stanley Makombe, Kennedy Mapeza, Martin Nyamupingidza and Christopher Samson. — Staff Writer.
