Mobil, Nando’s alliance sealed

NIGERIAN oil distributor Mobil said on Tuesday it would offer space at its service stations to the owners of Nando’s grilled chicken in an alliance likely to dominate the food fra

nchise business in the oil-rich nation.

Mobil, one of Nigeria’s leading petrol retailers, said in a statement the deal with Zimbabwe’s Innscor International also involves UAC of Nigeria, which operates the largest fast food business in the West African country.

Under the three-way deal signed last month, Mobil said it would build and equip the food facilities while UAC, Nigeria’s oldest company, would operate the outlets.

“The alliance will dominate the convenience food industry in Nigeria,” Mobil, a subsidiary of US giant ExxonMobil said in a statement.

Innscor International runs over 270 restaurants in 22 African countries, including South Africa.

Its popular brands include Nando’s grilled chicken, Steers ribs and burgers, Chicken Inn’s fried chicken, and Creamy Inn’s ice cream.

UAC franchise Mr Biggs is Nigeria’s largest fast food chain and opened its first international outlet in the Ghanaian capital Accra earlier this year.

“The duration of the agreement is 10 years and may be renewed,” said the statement.
