THE article “Zvinavashe to quit top military post” (Independent, October 3) has, sadly, damaged the claim that your publication justifiably has the reputation for factual accuracy in its reportin
In the article, Dumisani Muleya writes “…retired ZNA commander Solomon Mujuru and Rhodesian Army chief Peter Walls are the only commissioned full generals since Independence”.
This statement is incorrect. First, Peter Walls never held a rank higher than Lieutenant General. Second, the first officer to hold “full” general’s rank in post-Independence Zimbabwe was General ALC (Sandy) Maclean in the appointment of commander Defence Forces.
In this post, he assisted in amalgamating former enemies into the ZNA and AFZ (Air Force of Zimbabwe) at a critical time in the newborn Zimbabwe’s history.
Lieutenant General Mujuru was, indeed, promoted to general and Air Marshal Josiah Tungamirayi was elevated to air chief marshal (the air force equivalent) simultaneously. This occurred on the occasion of their retirement from the Defence Forces.
Whilst of little importance now, in the interest of historical accuracy, it would seem appropriate for you to publish a correction.
