WHILST on a recent visit to the country of my birth there was extensive coverage on the problems Zimbabweans are experiencing in Botswana. Whilst I do not agree with the inhuman treatment being meted out to Zimbabweans I could not help chuckle to

myself when these individuals started complaining about being called “Makwerekwere”.


Growing up in Mbare we had to put up with derogatory terms such as “Mabhurandaya” and “Manyasarande” . In the 90’s the new term was “Moskeni” and in 2000 “Totemless” Mbare people. Now that the shoe is on the other foot…
