Positive way forward for priests

THERE are no signs that the Vatican is going to change the rules governing priestly celibacy in the near future.

However, missing from the Canadian letter “Celibacy good for priests”, (Zimbabwe Independent, August 4) was any reference to the diaconate.

>After suitable training married men undertake duties within the scope of the clergy. This fulfills many a previously-held “calling”.

It may indeed also bring the communities closer together.

Even in a conservative area like Scotland, the diaconate is a growing area of useful commitment by the laity.

I recommend this as a really positive way forward for so many men and spouses who also must have a similar supportive commitment.
