“THE Bulawayo City Council has appealed for help from Vice-President Joice Mujuru in the construction of a pipeline between Mtshabezi and Mzingwane Dams to alleviate the city’s water problems.” – Zimbabwe Independent, October 21.
Mtshabezi Dam was built between 1992 and 1994 for the sole purpose of augmenting water supplies to Bulawayo, this having been proved to be the most economic means of achieving this objective.
Before construction of the dam was even complete, however, Bulawayo indicated refusal to accept water from this source. Its rejection was primarily due to pressure from the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Trust, which feared that acceptance of Mtshabezi water would delay realisation of its cherished dream of getting water from the north.
And now? Ironic, isn’t it?
