JUST prior to Christmas, when turning out of Helensvale road on to Borrowdale road, I noticed a very tall, slender, steel billboard frame being erected in the grounds of the Borrowdale Police station.
Being a structural engineer, I was very intrigued by the extremely lightweight nature of the steel members being used for such a tall structure supporting what would be a “sail effect” billboard.
The following day I noticed that the billboard had been erected advertising “Mr Muscle” cleaning agent. I commented to a colleague that if a strong wind were to blow, the billboard would be flattened.
Lo and behold the following morning, after the incidence of a storm, the “Mr Muscle” signage was not very muscular after plummeting to the floor. Fortunately it was in the police station yard and not on the main road where an accident could easily have been caused.
My main concern is over whether the engineer who designed the structure is a member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers. I am also keen to know if that person is registered with the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ). The ECZ is a product of an act of parliament and is in place to protect the community from such dangerous practices.
