OUR government officials mistake slogans for policy. They have been at it for years. The levels of mineral beneficiation have been low as the country has largely remained a net exporter of raw materials. How then can we achieve this beneficiation when our transport sector, NRZ and AirZim as well as communication, Telone and other support services are comatose?
Raising US$2 billion will require international partners. How do we get to this amount when our indigenisation policy is couched around expropriation? Given the excellent relationship we pretend to have with the Chinese, imagine where we would be now if our policy thrust was clear. Presently Zimbabwe ranks last in Southern Africa for destination of investments by these same “friends”.
This wishy-washy approach to investment sounds nice at rallies but in reality it is one big joke. Last time I checked the Chinese are not interested in tomfooleries but getting to the apex of the world economy and they are not taking prisoners along the way. On this runaway train to the top, is it not sad that there is no room for clowning jokers like us whose policy position –– if it exists –– as regard foreign investment is not known to the government itself.
