PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has attacked United States President Barack Obama for tying assistance to Africa and Zimbabwe in particular to legalising homosexuality.
Addressing thousands of Zanu PF supporters in Mutare today, Mugabe said: “Obama this man born of an African father and a white mother told us that US can only provide financial aid if we accepted homosexuality as a country.”
Mugabe is an avowed homophobic and has in the past attacked gays and lesbians as “worse than dogs and pigs”.
He said Zimbabwe will never accept homosexuality as it has no benefit to mankind.
“No gay couples could have children even if you lock them up for five years in a house.”
Mugabe said Manicaland should ensure that Zanu PF wins the province to avoid entering into another coalition government like what happened in 2008. Zanu PF then lost 20 of the 26 parliamentary seats to MDC-T in the province – its heaviest defeat since independence in 1980.
“We have to take these seats back even if it means taking them from the python that swallowed them in the last election,” Mugabe said.
All Zanu PF candidates who had filed their nomination papers as independents have withdrawn from the race in the province, among them, former provincial chairperson Mike Madiro, Dorothy Mabika and Christopher Chingosho.
